Legend has it that pirates would tie a lantern around the neck of an old nag and walk it along the beach at night. Unsuspecting ships would see the light bobbing up and down and assume it was a ship in safe harbor. Seeking safe harbor themselves they would approach the old nag and run aground. They’d then, of course, be pillaged and subsequently plundered (occasionally vice-versa).
